From the depths of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside comes Take5, a talented young man who has been bringing us his elaborate multi-colored graffiti murals since 1993. His name has become an urban legend, as he is also well known for his unique contributions to the local HIP HOP music scene. After surviving a devastating accident in 1995, Take5 was left a paraplegic. Unwilling to have his spirits dampened by this accident, Take5 aspired to rejuvenate his art career, knowing that there were many challenges ahead. Immediately after his accident, Take5 decided to dive right into the realm of graffiti art, DJing and Turntablism.
Eventually Take5 began getting recognized in the local art scene participating in extensive mural projects, street bombing, and gallery shows. Take5 helped facilitate the painting of Canada’s largest graffiti mural in Kamloops, B.C. and participated in the Society for Disability Arts and Culture’s art show at the Roundhouse community Centre, as well as another showing at the Bank of Hong Kong in Downtown Vancouver.
Take5 was recently featured in the Tommorow Collective’s Brief Encounters show doing live performance painting with filmaker Flick Harrison. Also Take5 recently created a graffiti mural in the Shadbolt Center for the Arts, for Martha Carter’s dance production “Rizilient”. Take5 has also produced paintings for Swatch Watch co, the University of Victoria, Kamloops Art Gallery, Richmond Art Gallery, International Youth week, Blunt Bros inc, the feature film Santa Clause 2 for Walt Disney Productions, Walls of Change mural project in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, the Woodwards Mural Project, Master’s of Horror TV program, the Pacific Cinemateque in Vancouver, the Telus International Snowboard Contest, Redbull Canada’s west coast and Winnipeg offices and many other events.
Take5 has also mentored students in numerous workshops and
co ordinated murals with organizations such as knowledgeable Aboriginal Youth Association, Richmond Art Gallery Student Program, and the National Film Board of Canada.
Take5’s art can be found in many major North American cities including New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, New Orleans, Miami, Seattle, San Diego, MontrĂ©al, Winnipeg, Victoria, Regina, Toronto, and many more. Take5 has been featured in many international publications and media including Saturday Night magazine, CBC television, Roger Gasman’s book “Freight Train Graffiti”, the Beholder, as well as the UTNE reader.
The name Take5 now symbolizes the struggle of a young paraplegic man, who in the face of adversity has shown his audience that with determination some of the arduous obstacles of disability can be overcome through creative self expression.
Take5 is currently showing in the group exhibit “T.A.G” at the Grand Palais in Paris, France, from March 27 to April 26 2009.
